DOSIMETER GUIDELINES

OFFWORLD APPLICATION

Dosimeters measure doses of ionizing radiation absorbed by personnel. The RadTag is specifically designed to track X- and Gamma-ray radiation commonly encountered in open space. This radiation can pass through all but the most specialized shielding material, damaging DNA and causing major health issues.

How does it work?

  • A fresh RadTag will appear almost entirely white, with the exception of the pre-exposed control markers. The control markers (three black "+" symbols) are exposed during manufacturing to verify effective coverage and reactivity

  • A heavily exposed RadTag will display an increasingly black radioactive symbol. This indicates the tag has received approximately 100 mSv of ionizing radiation since issue date

  • Please consult a specialist in your occupational field to determine acceptable amounts of exposure.

Who should monitor radiation exposure?

Spaceworkers such as miners and EVA maintenance crew are required to monitor radiation exposure, but even "clean" personnel such as pilots and administrative roles are at risk from cosmic rays.

Anyone who regularly travels outside the protection of a natural or artificial magnetosphere should carry, record, and regularly replace a dosimeter. Even individuals with any cybernetic quotient - including full prosthetic - need to track radiation exposure.

Upon issue, RadTags are marked with the owner's name and issue date.

POST-SERVICE RESALE

Some personnel - especially those who work a one-time offworld role - hold on to any and all souvenirs from their time in space. Many retain their exposed RadTags as badges of honor.  Most simply turn them in for recycling, as irradiated materials are prohibited on highly-regulated planets like Earth.

Never one to waste shiny trinkets, Starside Armory processes expired RadTags for decontamination and sells them as souvenirs. All expired RadTags for sale are from relatively clean professions. Some light wear may be present, but they bear no trace of harmful material or radiation.
